Sleeping in the Dark; Weightloss & A Happier You

sleeping

While reading my latest issue of Allure magazine I came across a very interesting weight loss article and  I wanted to share with you all. We can all benefit from any information that can possibly make us healthier and happier.

“Sleeping in complete darkness may help prevent weight gain and depression, research  suggests. Over eight weeks, mice exposed to dim lighting at night-the equivalent of leaving on a a television, computer, or adjacent bathroom light-gained 50 percent more weight than mice in total darkness, despite similar caloric intakes and activity levels. And hamsters subjected to nighttime light experienced a rise in depressive behaviors. The light may throw off the biological clock and increase  nighttime eating, says researcher Laura Fonken, a doctoral student at Ohio State University in Columbus. If the findings hold true for humans, she adds, people may benefit from a consistent sleep schedule and window curtains or sleep masks.”

So I think we all need to run out and stock up on some sleep masks!

Work Out and Weightloss Diary Week 1 and 2

I know on my first weight loss post I mentioned I would give you all an update on my progress, and I’m sorry that I didn’t do it last Monday, but it was Sammy’s 4th birthday and we took him out to dinner and  during that night Noah was up all night with a fever. Turns out his ear ruptured from a bad ear infection.

So anyway back to the update. During the first week, I woke up around 6:30 and did it a little meditation and yoga. For breakfast I had a berry hempshake followed by a shot of fish oil. During the morning I tried to drink plenty of water. Around 2 I did about 1 1/2 of cardio, weights, and yoga. For lunch I had another shake and drank water through out the rest of the day. For dinner I had something light and not too late in the evening.  By Sunday night I stepped on the scale and the magic number was… 105.3!

Week two: Not so great, Sammy’s birthday dinner, Hibachi! Not so healthy. Noah was sick with his ear and fever so that didn’t allow for much sleep, therefore I didn’t wake up at 6:30 to do my morning work out.  I did try keep up with my mi-day work out though, but I was out shopping and planning the boy’s birthday party. Saturday we had a party for both boys, cake and pizza, not so good again! I did however discover a new health smoothie. The Green Monster! It’s great for energy and it is filled with nutritious goodies! Weight loss for this week, 103.4. Not really much of a weight loss but at least I didn’t gain any.

Hopefully I do a lot better this week.

Workout and Weightloss Diary: Day 1

scale cry

“Don’t step on it!!!…. It makes you cry!!”

Unfortunately I have put on quite a few lbs lately and it’s time for me to get into shape.  I tend to get off track easily so I figured if I would post about my workout then I would be more motivated to keep up with it. We’re going on vacation at the end of May and I want to be able to wear a cute little swimsuit. Not only that but I think I feel way better when I work out.

I’m going to be using my Yoga Booty Ballet Series, start drinking my hemp shakes and drinking lots of water. No more sodas, or a lot of junk  food.

My beginning weight is 110 lbs! Yikes! I know it may not seem like a lot but I’m only 4’10 so any weight I put on definitely shows!

I’ll come back every Monday and post on my progress. Wish me luck! Swimsuit body, happier self, here I come!

My New Love…Coconut Oil

cocunut oil

Coconut oil is normally used in cooking but what many people don’t know are all the great health benefits it provides. The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone strength.

This is due to the lauric acid and its properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, and soothing. I have been using it on my hair, skin, and it is the best eye make up remover.

Coconut oil is solid at room temperature and quickly dissolves at 76 degrees.  I scoop it out and rub it between my hands and let my body heat melt it into an oil.

Hair Care: Coconut oil helps hair by making it shiny. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides essential proteins required to nourish damaged hair. I use it after I get out of the shower and my hair is still wet. I only apply it to the ends where it is more damaged from my straightening iron.

If you want to use it as a treatment,  I would apply it all over my hair and scalp and leave it on for about 2 hours and then shower as usual. If you have very dry hair, you can wrap your hair and leave it on over night. (Make sure you use something to protect your pillow) You may have two shampoo twice to make sure it’s completely washed out.

Skin Care: Coconut oil is a great massage oil because of it’s soothing smell. It acts as a moisturizer on all skin types, especially dry skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of the skin. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Recently I have been using it for shaving. It makes the razor glide smoothly and helps prevent cuts and ingrown hair. After I rinse it off my skin feels so soft. I can’t remember the last time I felt my skin this soft especially in the winter.

The other way I use it is to remove my makeup. I rub it on my face concentrating on my eyes to remove my eye makeup. Then I use hot water to remove it then follow up with my normal face cleanser and my nightly beauty routine. I have not had any break outs due to the oil, and I have not noticed more oil production.  I have seriously oily skin and I was hesitant to use it on my face but it has worked out great!

Celebrity Makeup Dont’s

As women we tend to look at celebrities for fashion and beauty trends. But no matter how famous and rich they are, they can still look like a big mess! These ladies (some) always look great when we see them on TV and we envy their stunning looks. On these nights however, either they gave their makeup artists the night off or they really pissed them off and  they let them go out the door with their version of a “kick me sign”

Bad Makeup Catherine Zeta Jones

Catherine Zeta Jones

Catherine Zeta Jones always looks regal and elegant, but this is an unfortunate case of bronzer overload and in all the wrong places! Not to mention her clumpy eyelashes and lack of concealer on her chin. Remember to keep your bronzer where the sun would naturally hit your face, and try one without too much shimmer.

bad makeup kim kardashian

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian has come a looong way with her makeup since we first heard of her! I’m all about matching your makeup to your clothes as long as it is not so matchy-matchy. The blue underneath her eyes just makes her look like she hadn’t slept in days! She should have kept the blue just on her waterline and not so thick under her eyes.

Bad Makeup Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman

When I think of Nicole Kidman, I think of creamy, pale, smooth skin. But this night her makeup artist seemed to just forget to blend the powder on her nose and under her eyes. You’d think someone could have just told her to wipe it off. Some  powders or concealers that have an SPF or are HD will turn white in flash photography so remember to go light, and wipe off the excess. If you know you are going to have your picture taken you may not want to use these products.

Bad Makeup Britney Spears

Britney Spears

Britney Spears… well she’s just a mess most of the time anyway. But in this picture her biggest mistake is a lack of mattifier. If you have oily skin, remember to prep your skin before applying your makeup and keep blotting papers handy at all time!

bad makeup pamela anderson

Pamela Anderson

Pamela Anderson… I have no words. Ladies lets just avoid all of this.

bad makeup sharon stone

Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone looks like she may have made her hair dresser mad too. But her eye shadow reminds me of a panda bear only not so cute. If you’re going for a smoky look remember to blend your eye shadows together so your it doesn’t look so severe. The key to a smoky eye is to BLEND!

bad-makeup avril lavine

Avril Lavine

Avril Lavine doesn’t have very many good makeup moments but even she should know that no one should wear red eye shadow all around your eyes. If you have blue eyes, golds and coppers, and browns look great on you. But keep it light and more on the gold side not on the red.

bad-makeup Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez

We all know Jennifer Lopez for having that “J-Lo glow”. In this picture though, her skin looks muddy and the eyeshadow and lip combo completely wash her out.  When choosing a bronzer make sure it doesn’t look muddy on your skin. And if you are going for the “tanned” look keep the rest of your face glowing and light.

Remember ladies to have fun with your makeup but try to avoid these makeup Dont’s!
